Why Former Giants’ C-G Weston Richburg fits Kyle Shanahan’s offense

The San Francisco 49ers just beefed up their offensive line and got their franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, some much need help up front with the addition of former New York Giants’ center/guard Weston Richburg. He intends to sign a five-year deal once free agency officially opens ( per Adam Schefter).

How did we get here?

The top guard was off the board. Former Panthers’ G Andrew Norwell committed to signing with the Jaguars on a 5-year deal for $66.5 million, including $30M fully guaranteed. Making him the highest NFL guard in league history-$13.3 million average ( Adam Schefter).

Here comes option No. 2

Weston Richburg, OC, UFA New York Giants

Why He Fits

The 49ers needed to find an upgrade at guard as recently discussed on Niners Live.

Richburg ended the year on injured reserve with a concussion sustained early in the season. Even so, Richburg may not be the injury-risk as other players might have been in the past (49ers’ signing or drafting injured players is well documented) as he was able to be cleared later in the season. He played a full season in 2016. The time he was on the field in 2017 and 2016, Richburg posted excellent pass blocking grades from (Pro Football Focus). In 2017, he was carrying a 98.6 pass blocking grade before being shut down for the year. Richburg brings versatility as he can play either the guard or center position.

Bottom Line

Richburg has appeared in 51 games during his four-year career. He started 50 of those contest. At the ripe (old) age of just 26 years young he still has upside to be a Pro Bowl caliber player, if he can stay healthy. For the record, he’ll be playing guard, according to NBCS Matt Maiocco. As an added bonus, Richburg has a history dating back to college of playing against Los Angeles Rams’ star defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

Important to note: Richburg’s deal is for five-years, $47.5M with $28.5M in guarantees, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. He gets $16.5M fully guaranteed.
