Niners Live steps up to the plate to discuss the “if” factor. If, meaning if the 49ers stay at number two and if Cleveland selects a quarterback as reported, the 49ers would throw a curve ball and select Myles Garrett with the second overall pick.
The “if” factor:
Don’t look now, but yet another potential twist to a coveted NFL draft is upon us. As you’ve probably heard by now, according to sources, the Cleveland Browns are undecided as to who they will select with their number one pick overall. Seeing as how they also are in need of a quarterback, it seems they may be intrigued by quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
The San Francisco 49ers and general manager John Lynch couldn’t get to the podium fast enough to select Garrett at the #2 spot (if) the rumors and speculation were 100 percent true. Some fans are feeling excited about the endless possibilities of drafting Garrett, however, could it all be a pipe dream? Full of fool’s gold? Hold that thought……
Feeling optimistic, are you?
Now see, this is where it gets good. In the event this plays out to be true and the Browns do select a quarterback, that drops the man himself Myles Garrett right into the lap of the 49ers. I think I’m hearing applause and celebration as we speak. Okay, I know what you may be thinking, “Niners Live recently expressed their need and desire for Solomon Thomas (5 tech edge rusher) in, 49ers: Why the Need (for a 5 Technique D-linemen) Outweighs the Need for a 3 Technique and did the same with their need and desire for Jamal Adams (safety) as previously discussed in: If the 49ers Elect to Draft a Safety, it Would be Adams over Hooker.
Well, while both are true and have been discussed, both scenarios were based on the “if” factor. So, if Myles Garrett is available at number two and the 49ers keep that pick, with the second pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select Myles Garrett defensive end, Texas A&M University.
His stats: 141 tackles (47 going for losses), 31 sacks with one interception and seven forced fumbles within his three-year college career.
- Can win any way as a pass-rusher. Has the burst to challenge the edge and the power to put offensive tackles on skates
- Also works the inside counter well, won to the inside just as much as he won to the outside
- Even distribution of pass-rushing wins: 20 outside, 20 inside, 10 bull rush
- Greatly improved his grade against pull blocks in the run game in 2016, play-by-play grading more than doubled in that area
- Can get caught upfield in run game
- Doesn’t always see crack block coming
- While much improved against the run, still has to prove it against NFL offensive linemen
- May never be a great run defender
The end game: There’s no doubt Garrett has the skills/freakish abilities to oppose his nightmare will as an elite pass-rusher coming into the National Football League. Obviously, he’s the top-rated player in the draft and the top pass-rusher to boot. However, he still needs to improve in his run defense which is something the 49ers will surely need having given up the most rushing yards in franchise history and a league high 2,654 yards, while being ranked dead last in defense.
Important to note: In 2016, the 49ers had 33 sacks amassed by their defense, while their opponents tallied up 47 (via the team’s website). No doubt Garrett can help in this area day one…
Can I leave you with some potentially bad news?
There’s been a growing consensus behind the scenes that the Browns are using this latest new found surge of interest in Trubisky as leverage to get the New England Patriots to come down on their asking price (cbssports.com) for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. So wait, what? Are you trying to play mind games with head coach Bill Belichick? Oh, ok, good luck with that…
Think John Lynch doesn’t know what’s going on? “It’s that time of year” Think again, watch video.
Daniel Jeremiah, for his part, thinks that would be a mistake.
“To pass on the best player, not only the best player in the draft but the best player who’s also at a premier position which you would put right behind quarterback in edge rusher,” he said, “to push a quarterback all the way up the board, I think would be a huge mistake.”
