Niners Live is asking the question: Can San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks have a throwback year? Or close to it? We will break it down and assess why we think he can still be effective, play at a high level, and just maybe showcase some throwback flashes of himself.
Ahmad Brooks will be needed and called upon the most this season to provide an outside pass rush, veteran leadership along with his wealth of experience and knowledge to help younger guys such as fellow outside linebacker Eli Harold.
Especially with Arron Lynch being suspended for the first four games of the season, getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks will be vital for this defense to get off the field on third down and give the high up-tempo offense of head coach Chip Kelly more opportunities to score points.
Which Ahmad Brooks shows up this season?
The one that showed up this offseason in better shape with little to no distractions? How about the one that flashed vintage Brooks against the Houston Texans when he registered a sack?

When Brooks is playing his game or on his game, he can give the 49ers flashes of his throwback self while still playing at a high level.
Here’s what position coach Jason Tarver had to say, regarding Ahmad Brooks via the team’s website.
“As long as Ahmad is doing his job one play at a time, he’s going to be in great shape. That’s where his mindset is right now. I’m proud of him. We want to keep him continuing on that path.”
“What Ahmad has, what he does really well, is his feel for football. The play when he got the quarterback (against the Texans) is a good example of that. When he starts with speed and feels blockers, he’s really good.”
Here’s what general manager Trent Baalke had to say, regarding Ahmad Brooks:
“Ahmad’s established himself as a starter here for a long time,” Baalke began. “He’s still capable of playing at a high level. You saw that the other night against the (Houston) Texans. He’s doing an awfully good job of picking up the new scheme.”
Statistics Career recap: Brooks heading into his 10th season, 8th with the 49ers has played 117 games starting 83 of those contest. Also, has totaled 47.5 sacks, 249 tackles, 11 forced fumbles, 26 passes defended with three interceptions returning one for a touchdown.
Closing thoughts on Ahmad Brooks:
General manager Trent Baalke also noted from the team’s website that Brooks’ coaches are pleased with him up to this point and feel he has a lot left in the tank. It’s imperative that Brooks plays at a high level this year and provide the 49ers defense with some consistent pass rush from the outside this season.

FYI: Playing the maybe or what if game here, but if Brooks is healthy and his motivation is intact, 49er fans could see 8-10 sacks from Brooks. But he’ll need Eli Harold to help take the heat/attention off him for that to happen, of course.
