The 49ers plan to give Jimmie Ward another long look at Cornerback

Recently, NBC’s lead insider covering the San Francisco 49ers, Matt Maiocco, reported the 49ers will give Jimmie Ward a long look at corner.

Back on March 23rd, 2018, Niners Live asked the 49er Faithful: Adrian Colbert vs. Jimmie Ward; Who starts at Free Safety? Forty-Niners’ General Manager John Lynch may have answered that question for the Faithful. Lynch on Ward: “Jimmie Ward is a guy who’s played some outside corner in his career,” Lynch said. “We’re going to experiment with that this offseason and see if that’s viable and give him some time there.”

Cornerback’s Richard Sherman and Ahkello Witherspoon are expected to be the starters. Behind these two there’s not much depth at cornerback. Greg Mabin ( appeared in six games for the 49ers) will be in the serious conversation department for a roster spot at cornerback and on special teams.

Mabin was waived by the Buffalo Bills last October. Lynch on Mabin: “He’s got to continue to develop,” Lynch said. “Unfortunately for him, right when he started to get on the field (last season), he was injured with a calf strain. We feel guys like that are going to have to emerge and step up.”

Important to note: Ward will be playing his 2018 season, via a fifth-year option, worth $8.526 million.

Not only did Adrian Colbert outperform Jimmie Ward statistically, Colbert did so during the 49er winning streak meaning opposing teams were throwing from behind in games trying to win while Jimmie Ward played the position during the long losing streak where most teams virtually stopped passing running down the clock after sealing a victory.
Jimmie Ward will be good depth/ reserve but at a cost of $8.5 million ?
This alone gives cause to wonder if Ward will be given a green light & handed the starting job even though not the best Safety available.
Colbert only advantage is he was actually drafted by Lynch where Jimmie Ward can be viewed as just 1 more 1st round mistake by Trent Baalke.
