The San Francisco 49ers reportedly “will work toward a multi-year extension” for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, according to the teams longtime beat writer Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. So if a deal can be reached by the two sides, what’s the starting point? Hold that thought…
Laying the groundwork how we got here:
The San Francisco 49ers traded their own 2018 second-round draft pick for New England Patriots’ quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and released veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. And since the trade, Jimmy G has been nothing short of sensational accounting for 5 touchdowns against 3 interceptions. And I might add throwing for 1,250 yards since week 13 which is the 3rd most yards in the NFL and 1st in the NFC. Also to not be outdone, his QBR (total QB rating) stands at 80.4 and has an RTG (passer QB rating) of 102.4. And a 4 game winning streak that has breathed life/hope back into the “San Francisco 49ers” franchise and a fan base called the “Faithful.”
Jimmy G has made everyone around him better on both sides of the ball and all facets of the game (including how Kyle Shanahan calls plays). Which former 49ers’ quarterback Jeff Garcia pointed out recently:
“He’s able to expand the offensive installation with Jimmy,” former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia said of the Shanahan-Garoppolo pairing on the 49ers Insider Podcast (h/t Maiocco). “Now that Jimmy has had a better chance to get a firm grip on the system and really start to bring everything he has within his playbook, you can see the capabilities of what this offense can produce.”
His leadership skills and skill set are extraordinary and unmatched, indeed. He’s heading into the last week of the season with a mission and that’s to be 7-0 as a starter and complete a 5-game winning streak by defeating the L.A. Rams.
Why Derrek Carr’s contract may be the starting point
This past summer the Raiders reached a deal with Derek Carr on a five-year, $125 million extension with $40 million fully guaranteed, $70 million in total guarantees and a $12.5 million signing bonus, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport (via NFL.com).
Important to note: Head coach Kyle Shanahan and General Manager John Lynch signed 6-year deals this past offseason. Jimmy G’s new expected 5-year deal would tie him to the hip of both of these men; which Niners Live believes is the goal and plan.
Now, why Carr? Both are 26 years old and were drafted in the same 2014 draft 4 years ago. (Carr, 36th overall and Jimmy G, 62nd overall). Carr was paid off his upside and potential, not just his production (see link above). Can you see where I’m going? Carr also looks like he’s regressing or has hit his ceiling at least (43 career interceptions and has had double-digit interceptions 3 out of 4 seasons). Carr currently sits at 12 and counting. Does Jimmy G look like he’s ascending? Ok, so you know I’m stating facts.
Shanahan has already had a bromance with Jimmy G since the draft of 2014, all positives to get a deal like this done in the offseason. Per Spotrac.com, the Niners have $117.9 million of cap space heading into the 2018 season.
No doubt that when Jimmy Garoppolo’s agent, Don Yee, sits down with Chief Strategy Officer and EVP of Football Operations Paraag Marathe and General manager John Lynch, Carr’s contract will be the starting point of negotiations as well as Mr. ” Franchise Tag “and market game changer (2017 tag salary $23,943,600) quarterback Kirk Cousins.
