Niners Live believes rookie speedster running back, Matt Breida, should be incorporated more into the 49ers offense. Here is our case on why he needs more touches in the running and passing game.
Stating our Case:
The San Francisco 49ers have a top 10 rusher in, Carlos Hyde, 332 yards (6th), but teams know that Hyde is the 49ers primary offensive weapon. Hyde is nursing a hip injury which limits his touches in future games until he is back to full strength. The team needs to implement Breida more to give opposing defenses different looks, relieve Hyde, and add game-breaking speed to the offense.
In week five against the Indianapolis Colts, head coach Kyle Shanahan did exactly what we are proposing. Breida ended the game with more carries than Hyde; 10 versus eight. He also outgained Hyde; 49 yards versus 11 yards. Breida added three catches for 22 yards. By no means are we saying he should replace Hyde as the starter, but it’s clear that the team needs a two-prong attack to be a more dynamic and explosive offense.
Career Stats: 30 carriers, 120 yards, 4.0 ypc, eight receptions, 49 yards, 6.1 avg. Breida has played in all five games (NFL.com).
Another reason Breida should get more touches is that Hyde is in his contract year and may not be with the team next season. The team needs to groom a replacement and he is the surprising leading candidate. He beat out fourth-round pick Joe Williams in training camp for the primary back up spot. Breida went undrafted and signed with the 49ers after the draft, making him a diamond in the rough find for the personnel department. If Hyde is not re-signed, he will be the top choice to win the starting spot. Breida has a blend of speed, vision, soft hands, underrated power and plays with a big chip on his shoulder. He is a perfect fit for Shanahan’s zone running scheme.
The 49ers’ offense needs more playmakers touching the ball, and Breida is a leading candidate. His speed and toughness downfield running style can help the offense increase its productivity. The 49ers also need to spell Carlos Hyde so he can last the entire season and by giving Breida more carries would allow this. Breida also needs to get invaluable playing time to gain experience and confidence in this offense and the NFL. At 0-5 the 49ers are in rebuilding mode and he is a solid building block whose talents need to be taken advantage of sooner rather than later.
